that's where you are wrong, in Canada, handguns are in fact legal to possess, you must obtain a restricted endorsement on your Possession an Acquisition License, there's a course you have to take. But in order to take it any where but outside your home it must be in a locked case and trigger locked and a permit to transport it to a location, i.e. gun range or gunsmith. but if the barrel is less than 4" it is prohibited.
