White Castle 34th 2011 Empire State Arm Wrestling Championships

Returning title holders and hungry contenders shared the winners' circle at the White Castle 34th Annual Empire State Golden Arm Tournament of Champions at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in NYC

New York, New York - Thursday, November 17, 2011 --- During the day thousands of spectators, die-hard fans and passing commuters, cheered for both the favorites and underdogs during the typically short to one-minute matches as the New York Arm Wrestling Association presented the 34th Annual White Castle Empire State Golden Arm Tournament of Champions at the Port Authority Bus Terminal today. The defending pro super-heavyweight champion Giorgi Gelashvili from Sheephead Bay, Brooklyn dominated the super heavy weight classes in both the right and left hand categories beating all the challengers. Gelashvili then beat on all the first place winners in their respective weight classes earning him the day's MVP and NY State Strongest Arm and Overall Champion in the right and left hand categories. In the female open class another Brooklynite and defending Empire State Champ Joyce Boone from Carroll Gardens Brooklyn was honored as the first female ever to be chosen as NY State Arm Wrestler of the year. Boone was billed as NYC's Queen of Arms last April at the NYC Big Apple Grapple International at the Village Pourhouse Sports Bar in NYC. Boone also defended her title by beating seven women and winning this year's Empire State Championship. The Brooklyn team won the team champions award for tallying the most points.

In all, there were eleven weight classes with pro and amateur categories. This much-anticipated final of the NY Golden Arm Series is one of the oldest and most prestigious arm wrestling-title events in New York City., the other is the NYC Big Apple Grapple International. Qualifying tournaments were held this year in three of the five NYC boroughs and Long Island. Since there were no residency requirements, contestants from out of state and countries also competed since the event was a walk-in registration. A tough, versatile pro, veteran arm wrestler, Ron Klemba from Portland, Ct. had the audience in a screaming, cheering-frenzy as he came back from within an inch of losing a 198 pound weight class match, in the finals against Lajos Konya from Hungary.

In the pro competition's 154 pound class it was Oleh Frankivskyy from Brooklyn, NY who over powered Harry Wilson from Brooklyn in the finals. Seven women competed today and Joyce Boone from Brooklyn had no problems strong arming all comers.

The amateur classes provided with top talent as Anthony Parisi from Peoria, Arizona won the 176 pound class by beating last year's defending champ Adam Katz from Westfield NY in the final match and Ozan Sari from Turkey was third. Julio Rosario from the Bronx won the 198 right hand and stepped up in class to capture the left hand class earning him the Arm-Star award. Other winners include: Brian Burgos from East Rockaway, NY who won the left hand 198 pound class and David Milburn who beat all comers to win the right hand Super Heavy weight class.

I'm a Bronx guy and have eaten my share of White Castle but I did bust out laughing when John Colbert, in a bit on Comedy Central, referred to White Castle as "gourmet dog food"!
