Michigan Democratic Party Chairman Attacks Citizen Camera

A video taken on July 19, 2005 by Chetly Zarko at the Michigan Board of Canvassers hearing on the question of the whether to certify Proposal 2 for the November 2006 ballot. Democratic Canvasser Doyle O'Connor is seen requesting a 5 minute recess, followed by Michigan Democrat Party Chairman Mark Brewer whispering orders to O'Connor and fellow Democrat Canvasser Paul Mitchell.

When Brewer notices the camera, he swats at it ordering the camera to be taken away. The scene ends with a retreat to a deep corner of the hallway with a Democrat staffer waving paper to obstruct the camera.

This happened back in 2005. What has become of this incident?

Well, the incident apparently is still being investigated by the Michigan Bar (Doyle O'Connor is an attorney), as of this January at least, as part of a larger investigation dealing with O'Connor's later refusal to follow a court order. And people still occasionally comment on it to me - even, or especially, Democrats.

No action ever was taken against Brewer formally, because there really is nothing formal that could be done given that he the MDP party chairman and had no ethical obligations.
