Whether or not the al-Qaeda attacks were "blowback" from the American CIA's "Operation Cyclone" program to help the Afghan mujahideen is a matter of some debate. Robin Cook, former British Foreign Secretary from 1997-2001, has written that al-Qaeda and Bin Laden were "a product of a monumental miscalculation by western security agencies," and that the mujahideen that formed al-Qaeda were "originally ... recruited and trained with help from the CIA".

A variety of sources — CNN journalist Peter Bergen, Pakistani ISI Brigadier Mohammad Yousaf, and CIA operatives involved in the Afghan program, such as Vincent Cannistraro — deny that the CIA or other American officials had contact with the Afghan Arabs (foreign mujahideen) or Bin Laden, let alone armed, trained, coached or indoctrinated them.

However Milton Bearden, the CIA Field Officer for Afghanistan [1985-89] during an interview in the BBC documentary The Power of Nightmares (Part 2.), referring to the Afghan Arabs said: "The only times that I ran into any real trouble in Afghanistan was when I ran into 'these guys' - You know there'd be kind of a 'moment' or two that would look a little bit like the bar scene in Star Wars, ya know. Each group kinda jockeying around and finally somebody has to diffuse the situation."

But Bergen and others argue that there was no need to recruit foreigners unfamiliar with the local language, customs or lay of the land since there were a quarter of a million local Afghans willing to fight; that Arab Afghans themselves had no need for American funds since they received several hundred million dollars a year from non-American, Muslim sources; that Americans could not have trained mujahideen because Pakistani officials would not allow more than a handful of them to operate in Pakistan and none in Afghanistan; and that the Afghan Arabs were almost invariably militant Islamists reflexively hostile to Westerners whether or not the Westerners were helping the Muslim Afghans.

According to Peter Bergen, known for conducting the first television interview with Osama bin Laden in 1997, the idea that "the CIA funded bin Laden or trained bin Laden ... a folk myth. There's no evidence of this. ... Bin Laden had his own money, he was anti-American and he was operating secretly and independently. ... The real story here is the CIA didn't really have a clue about who this guy was until 1996 when they set up a unit to really start tracking him." But as Bergen himself admitted, in one "strange incident" the CIA did appear to give visa help to mujahideen-recruiter Omar Abdel-Rahman.

Al-Qaeda has a long history with the CIA, especially their Special Activities Division. This famed special operations component of the CIA is the primary mission force of the United States in the war against Al Qaeda and has had the most success.

  • Jajajaja Shit!! And I'm supposed to be the Terrorist!!! Ain't that something!!

  • No situation ever has to endure so much doubt surrounding it if it were sound. so my conclusion is there's more happenig than our world govts want us to know.. thats for sure.

  • lol my friend says Omar Abdel Rahman : " you kidding me he's blind and he's the bad guy like it's a Batman movie "

  • 9/11 was ABSOLUTELY Blowback as well as an inside job. It was both. Inside job in that our GOVT allowed it to happen for it's own interests.

  • My friend, it's not just the Arabs who are concerned about the actions, motives and agendas of the Jews. Your question shows lack of knowledge on Jewish history. Perhaps you should read what Jews did to blacks during the slavery trade. (Aaron Lopez) is one name of many Jews in the USA mass traded slaves. What they did to black people far out-weighs what Hitler did to the Jews. Yet this holocaust get absolutely no media coverage. Why? maybe you should look who dominates the media :o)

  • Why are Arabs so paranoid about Jews controlling the world? Maybe because of fear and lack of education. After the holocaust, refugee parents decided that the only way out of poverty was to educate their children. As adults today Jews are highly educated and hold respected positions in many governments Not because they are jews but because they are educated and are capable of doing the job. Arabs once contributed science, art and a rich culture to the world-why have they lost it????

  • Yeah i know i don't believe what i hear in the media that how we live in fear and give up our civil liberty just for protection and looking for proof and finding it make you believable and that you spread the true.

  • I look for proof & ask questions. ALWAYS 2 sides 2 every story. I don't only look at what happend, I look to see why it happend & if there are other versions. gib told of a pregnant woman not allowed thru checkpost in israel. I can't prove it, but a different senerio could be she gave birth and an israeli dr or soldier delivered her baby at the checkpost. Maybe, could be, just suppose??? Don't take everything at face value just because the media says so. Sensationalism is what media presents.

  • It actually Jose i don't believe anything without finding proof what about you

  • Anyone can make movies and comments-does not make them true. Arabs don't even believe their own TV news-I suppose Israel controls Arab media also. According to glibson, Israel controls the world. Jimmy, read what you will, but use your own mind & know that there are other versions to the same story and hidden agendas even from your new friend gibby. Pictures of dead babies make sensational news & Arab public relations dont care what they show as long as blood is seen. I do NOT condone killing.
