With nearly 30% of urban teachers leaving the profession within their first five years, urban school districts need strategies to help retain talented and qualified teachers. Now, unique partnership between PREP-KC, UMKC and Kansas City, Kansas Public Schools (KCKPS) has lead to a innovative strategy to help meet this challenge.
This May, the inaugural class from PREP-KCs specially designed Urban Teacher Leadership Masters degree program graduated from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. This cohort of 14 emerging teacher leaders from KCKPS completed the challenging two-year program while continuing to teach in the district. Each one also has committed to continue teaching in the district for at least four years after completing the program.
