This is great- I bought the dvd after seeing bits on youtube a while back. I know purists hate a film, rather than filmed, version of anything but I really enjoyed it.
His acting is not his best, presumably doing take after take is rather more tedious than doing it live, but the singing is fantastic.
I do so very want all his costumes from it, though in a much smaller size.

Pavarotti? Needing extra takes? Unheard of.

Maybe not for his singing but he seems to be having an truly desperate experience with his acting, compared to his work on stage, where he always seems very much at his ease.
I suspect he knew perfectly well he was not much of an actor, and that it would show more on film than in the theatre.

They're two very different styles. Having done both (not professionally) I can say that the transition is not easy at all.
