Discover bacteriophages and phage therapy - a tour of the world-famous Eliava Institute in Tbilisi, Georgia whilst renovations were taking place during 2007.
Introductory slide show produced by Grace Filby, Churchill Fellow of 2007 researching the health value of bacteriophages.
Phages are bacteriolytic agents - they infect and destroy bacteria naturally, so phage therapy is a method of treating bacterial infections without the adverse effects of modern antibiotics.
Therapeutic phage products are made at the Eliava Institute and available in Georgia at pharmacies for 9 lari per box (about 3 GBP) without a prescription, for common bacterial infections. Phages are used routinely throughout entire hospitals in Georgia.
