Mochi delivers and nibbles on the bloody placenta after giving birth to her second baby.

Chinchillas deliver a placenta for each baby that is delivered. Many chinchillas will nibble at the afterbirth, which is rich in protein, but they should not be permitted to eat the entire thing. Chinchillas are vegetarians and therefore cannot digest meat. Eating too much of the placenta will cause impaction and other digestive problems, and so it should be removed from the cage shortly after being delivered.

  • You should've let the mother eat the placenta..

And you should've gotten rid of most of the wood shreddings before the birth.. =)

  • @theysayimkennyful Thanks for the comments! Although the placenta is rich in nutrients and protein, chinchillas are vegetarians, and may have problems if they eat too much of the placenta. As for the wood shavings, they are safe, however I agree it is important to maintain a clean cage, especially with the newborns!

  • did it just eat the placenta? O_o

  • @Fatpandas2014 She was starting to nibble at it, but it was removed from the cage after the video.

  • what are the two other pieces of flesh? so scary@@

and do you clean the babies or the Mochi cleans them?

  • @JakesterJung The two pieces of flesh are the placentas, the mom delivers one for each baby that is born. The mom cleans and dries the babies, although with larger litters sometimes you have to step in to help her.

  • That was so fucking creepy D: but interesting

  • it looks like a horror movie.

    xDD

  • I'm in the wierd part of youtube again.

  • why does the she have placentas

  • that was weird

  • Hm..I believe that in the wild, chinchillas and other similar animals will eat the placenta simply because leaving it behind would make it far easier for predators to find and kill both the mother and her babies, as well as a way to replenish nutrients after giving birth. In a domestic setting, it's unnecessary since there are both no predators and no danger of having trouble finding food.

  • aaaaaaaaaaaa omg aaaaaaaaaaaa aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa

  • awe sooooo cute

  • @thisiswhyimhotcow You're an expert that can't spell "they're" correctly.

  • Slightly, umm, disturbing. But it is the Beauty of Birth!
