The Barkhausen effect is a name given to the noise in the magnetic output of a ferromagnet when the magnetizing force applied to it is changed

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Barkhausen_effect

Can this effect be seen?

Here I try using a 1200x microscope and a couple magnets with some amazing effects.

  • It occurs to me (as devil's advocate) that the stage of the microscope may be moving due to stress. Do you get similar movement if you touch the stage with your finger ?

Suggestion: It is possible to examine surface deformations with interferometry... of course I WOULD say that, wouldn't I ?? hehe.

  • I did further tests making sure the magnet and scope were mounted solid. I now have a better scope and will be replicating this experiment again soon. It seems somthing is going on here, when I did move the magnet by hand it did not look the same.

  • If you have a laser, I can teach you some basics in interferometry which you might find useful. I'd be interested to know what your further experimentation shows.
