Francisco Mateu " Uetam" (1847 - 1913) Was a spanish bass well known in 19th Century, he made his debut in 1869, with Linda de Chamounix, and since then he sang in Portugal, Italy and Russia, mainly. He sang with Mattia Battistini in " Faust", in 1885 in Madrid.

His father wanted him to be a sailor, following the traditional family job, but his mother and sisters supported him to dedicate to singing. Conductor Juan Goula presented him to the majorcan opera house, where he made his debut 1869. He changed his surname Mateu to Uetam, to make it more exotic

He is remembered one of the best Basses in 19th Century. The present recording shows him singing at 57, when his voice passed its prime, but still enormous and beautiful, singing in a wax cylinder.
