Since this is story telling through sword fight i find it important that the defences are performed with clear bending of the arm. I know that sometimes one wants to keep the opponents blade away so hard that one tends to defend with the arm outstretched, but if both people have their arms stretched it becomes less clear who the attacker is. Hope people understand the differences between this and competition and that they learn safely (god knows I take too many risks in my shows). Nice videos.

Also, good idea for these binds that you are learning about, it is simply a matter of moving the blade through your parries, take her first bind for example. Taking the attack with a one, you can move the blade up over your head to a 5 parry, then bring it back down to a 3, releasing the parry with a push of your blade. This not only helps to keep the blade out of eachother's faces, but also gives your opponent more control over how much he wants that bind to effect him.

Please keep in mind that these lessons are for theatrical performances, not competition. Stage combat drives the story forward and develops the characters involved. The idea is to give the perception of realism, not to kill. Making the combat more realistic and dangerous looking comes with time, it is not something one can learn from simply watching youtube videos, it takes practice and hard work.

@linkg13 Fencing only requires one blade and a different style. It does have similar moves but they're different. You'd never win in a sword fight with fencing moves, especially since you don't have a dagger to help you parry. Fencing's primary goal is to touch the opponent, stage combat teaches you to aim to miss since real weapons (not sharpened, of course) are used. It's theatrics.

@linkg13 This isn't fencing, moron. This is stage combat with
rapier and dagger and there is no equipment. Get your facts straight
before posting anything, idiot.
To Ashley, I love your videos. They've helped me jump start some memories
from my own stage combat class that, I am sorry to say, cannot take
anymore due to schedule problems. Good work.
