DAY 31: OCTOBER 31st, 2008

LOCATION: NY Pizza Suprema (8th Ave. and 31st St., NYC)

ORDER: 1 slice plain, 1 upside down slice, half of a fresh mozzarella

GUEST(S): Mark Grenier, Joe Thistle, Natalie Jeffers

PIZZA REVIEW:
Somethings never change, hopefully NY Pizza Suprema is one of them. For over 40 years, this Italian owned pizzeria has been importing high quality ingredients into their refrigerator and exporting them on each and every pie they make. And they make a lot of pies. During lunch, the line of folks trying to get a slice of Suprema stretches almost across the street into Penn Station. It moves quickly thanks to the folks behind the counter. They are a happy staff proud to be maintaining the legacy and recipes of the late Salvatore Riggio. My favorite slice is the plain cheese but I prefer a more savory than sweet tomato sauce.

If you like sweet though, try a slice of the Sicilian "upside down slice" - so named because the sauce is on top of the cheese. The ingredients are also of the highest quality but the thicker crust is much more filling. NY Pizza Suprema may look and charge like an ordinary slice place, but it tastes like your new favorite pizza joint. Stop by and try it, I'll meet you there.

MISC.:
1. Mark Grenier waves to the camera in the video.

2. Joe Thistle and Natalie Jeffers invite me into their apartment and let me wear a track suit for Halloween that I wear while doing the post pizza review.

3. Thus ends Pizza Month 2008. It was delicious!

  • seriously with the headband?

  • ha! Good point. In my defense, it was Halloween and my costume was much tamer than some of the others I encountered. Thanks for the comment!

  • NY pizza is king.

  • After years of experimenting, I am inclined to agree with you. That being said, I've never been to Italy. Thanks for the comment.

  • you're so lucky living in new york...i have to fly all the way from scotland to get new york pizza lol

  • Do it! Our economy needs it...and you won't regret the pizza. :) Thanks for the comment.

I don't think NY is the only pizza town in America, I actually thought Bay Area pizza many times is superior to what is found in NY. They actually have a very tasty translation of an NY slice in a place in Berkeley. LA also has some good pizza places. Vito's is NY style but a bit thinner.

  • I used to live in NY, I went to this place on a tip for its upside down slice, but I was blown away by the standard slice. I went again a year later, got the standard slice, but noticed the sauce tasted different. So I guess not every place is consistent unless its DiFara's since one person makes the pizza.

  • i've already booked my flights for this summer, can't wait!!

  • Thanks for tuning in! If you're ever in NYC, drop me a line. We can grab a slice.
