Bumble bee nest box. Bumble bees nest in the ground. They like to use old mouse holes. These boxes give them more choices. In my garden it's mainly bumble bees doing the pollinating. I guess you could use it in a greenhouses also, if it were occupied and you brought it in at night. Put it on the ground where it won't flood. Put a large rock on top to stop larger animals messing with it.

  • I would think whatever nest they build, or take over, would have the problem of predators - I guess that's why they have stingers! Anyway, no visitors 2010, let's see if I get any 2011. But thanks for caring.

  • That is a really good nest box! But please make the whole smaller, because preditors will be able to fit in and kill your bees! about 1cm is fine or a 3rd of an inch! just big enough for the Queen bee to fit in.

It depends what bumble bees you have? we had buff tails last year and they where using a converted bird box from March right up until October.

  • So if the box is 16 inches long and the big chamber is 8 inches, wouldn't that just mean it is about have the length of the box. The video looks like 2/3rds, not 1/2. So maybe the box is shorter?

  • I love bumble bees. Great pollinators!

  • Bumble Bees will usually take advantage of a variety of sites to nest. I was cleaning out our barn one day, and found that colonies of bumble bees had made nests in a pile of old cardboard boxes. The boxes were filled with shredded material the bees had collected or maybe mice had collected. The material was filled with small shells; each filled with bee larvae. They are hardy bees, great pollinators. They dont even mind a little bad weather. Flying in less than ideal conditions.

  • Hi, Unfortunately the entrance will allow woodmice easy access and they will eat the bees, larvae etc., and destroy the nest. It will also easily allow ants in the nest. The first chamber is used for the bees to clean themselves, groom, etc., and gives them a porch basically. Old mouse nest material is the best material. in the wild bees seek out old mouse nests. They seek them out.

    Cheers George UK

  • Love the psychedelic bee!

  • I wonder if you had any bees move in this spring?
