the u.s. troops left taiwan voluntarily. they didnt have to but did. they can also return as they wish, because of the u.s. legal status to occupy by usmg. why? because in 1951 the japs surrendered taiwan to the u.s.. that means the claims of ownership and sovreignty of taiwan are held in trust by the u.s. thats a legal fact by treaty.the r.o.c and p.r.c. know that. the commies dont like it but its very true. no one has sovreignty of taiwan not even the u.s. but they have legal status to occupy
-
yes they can.legally by treaty. the u.s. deisel subs are there own design. im not assuming anything. the u.s. did not retreat from taiwan that implies they were defeated in a war that doesnt change the u.s. legal status from the treay of san fran 1951. taiwan is held in trust as a u.s. territory. thats a fact.. they vacated taiwan when they switched formal recognition to the p.r.c. but still have the right by treaty to occupy.the u.s is not selling subsor f-16 c/d because of politics
-
@xxwzaebd the ro.c. has money to pay for all the weapons theu.s. will sell them. theres no need for loans. i dont understand why youre not getting me. the reason the u.s. doesnt sell the r.o.c. all the weapons at once is because of the delicate game they play politically with the p.r.c. the u.s. left taiwan militarily because of switching recognition to the p.r.c. but the u.s still can occupy by treaty. its all a political game.the tra calls for selling weapons for defense as theu.s. sees fit.

The only way now is to provide Taiwan with long term, large scale loans not only for the needed weapons items but also for establishing a minimum industry infrastructure for maintenance of existing weapons and manufacturing of new F16s, tanks and subs etc. by importing complete "industrial plants" from Korea. About 100 billion USD of loans repaid during maybe 50 years, with lowest interest rate should work.

Read news and check facts instead of putting these and those assumptions. The US has stopped building diesel subs after Albacore and export of dieselified nuclear subs won't happen. European designs cannot be obtained since they won't approve export of their designs for fear of pressure from China. The defence budget has decreased under the Ma administration. The US cannot and will not occupy Taiwan. US Army retreated from Taiwan very long ago.
-
@xxwzaebd i dont know where youre getting your info from. but the r.o.c has all the money they need to buy any weapons. the u.s has been building deisel subs for decades. they also made the first nuclear subs. so how do you conclude the u.s. cant make them anymore?? thats absurd. its about politics. the r.o.c is considered a gov-in exile. the u.s hold taiwan claims in trust as a territory. the u.s. can occupy taiwan and replace the r.o.c. i think the u.s.will sell r.o.c everything soon.
-
The US government approved the sales but sufficient funding has to be prepared by the Taiwanese goverment yet.The sales of new F16s is not likely either and, as for the subs,as the US cannot make diesel subs anymore, a design has to be procured from Europe but nobody is going to transfer such technology there. The current air force inventory of Taiwan was procured in its better days, that is, when it spent more in defence than Korea. Now it only spends 1/3 of Korea.

@xxwzaebd i think we have a bit of miscommuication on the issue. by upgrades i mean the u.s. sold the r.o.c the technology to upgrade there current f-16 a/b to the more proficient c/d they paid for all that. what they also want and need are the new f-16c/d. not the upgrades only, but the new jets,66 of them to replace there f-5's which are getting too old. the r.o.c can afford the new f-16 c/d as well as the new submarines. but the u.s wont sell them those just yet. i hope this year they will.
-
Another problem is that Taiwan's current government spends too little on defence. The lack of a heavy industry infra required for domestic production /maintenance of weapon systems(or other industrial goods) should also be a limiting factor. As for the upgrades, there is not sufficient funding for a full scale upgrade.
-
@xxwzaebd the u.s. has sold more weapons to taiwan in the last three years than at any other time. they have sold the r.o.c the upgrades for the f-16 a/b and i think they will at some point still sell them the new f-16c/d as well. its all politics and very frustrating. its called strategic ambiguity and its quite infuriating but thats the method the u.s. and other countries are implementing.
