A Marine TA-4 piloted by Captain Jim "Spot" Spaith was spotting for the USS Jersey's 16" guns when it was struck by North Vietnamese anti-aircraft fire on October 1, 1968. The spotter was 1stLt. U. S. "Sam" Grant. The crew was able to bail out over the ocean and were picked up by a whaleboat from the USS Towers.
