It's AMAZING how Salonga has grown into the role of Fantine: from this moment before she started her stint on Broadway and had just started studying Hugo's book thoroughly, to her spectacular and very informed performance in Les Miz's 25th anniversary in October 2010 where she showed her ACTING AND VOCAL SUPERIORITY over the great Patti Lupone and the much-overrated Ruthie Henshall. It's no surprise that critics have dubbed Salonga as THE Legendary Fantine!

@luvjackandsally Agree completely...Elaine and Susan have "fuller" voices and I think it suits the music better...Nevertheless, beautiful voice!

After hearing Boyle's I went on here to find other versions. After I heard this one I realized that Boyle was only modestly talented. =)

To compare susan boyle to lea salonga is stupid. leah salonga already got 2 awards for broadway performance and she's been in broadway since 1990. susan is new pls people do your research.

Too much vibrato for me, but otherwise a very nice performance.

it's not surprising though. becoz lea salonga is in theater and theater artists doesn't usually get same attention as recording artists...
Lea Salonga is an excellent professional singer...
Susan Boyle is a unemployed lady from Scotland and she did an excellent job... It is not enough difference?

i LOVE lea salonga. i think she was one of the most beautiful voices in recorded musical theatre history, but for me, i prefer fantine to have a "rougher" voice. like, patti lupone or ruthie henshall.
