In this video I analyse the differences between karate and the 3 internal arts of taijiquan, baguazhang and xingyiquan. I do so by using the basic karate form of gekisai (specifically gekisai dai ni, although I use elements of ichi too) and analyse how the form would be performed using the principles of each of the internal arts. At the end I offer a composite form, combining elements of karate and the internal arts into one consistent paradigm.
Please note that none of the performances were done "with power". That will have to wait - I'm nursing some injuries. And if you're a dreamer or fantasist who wants to see chi balls, "energies" (yes, you know it's going to be trouble when you see that word in plural), "power generation" or some other nonsense, please look elsewhere and don't bother me with nasty, anonymous comments. Ditto if you just love watching MMA and think you know how to fight as a consequence. This is a serious dissection of the principles of movement underlying 3 different arts. It is an analysis that is sincerely done using the scientific method and was arrived at after a great deal of time and effort. I don't care if you respectfully disagree with my conclusions - I do care if you just want to leave some nasty remark. Do us both a favour and don't. I'm not in the mood to suffer idiots and I simply won't bother approving your comment. A faster, more "forceful" performance of the final combination form (jisui) can be found at http://youtu.be/4qeP6LFUmdo (a bit rushed, but I was moving through the pain).
For the rest, I hope you find this analysis interesting - perhaps even useful. This video is a forerunner to an article I'm writing about experiments in "fusion" of the internal arts and karate.
Be well and happy new year!
It's amazing how your deep knowledge of four different arts can be understood so deeply that they are, essentially, transferable: what appears to be different concepts to achieve the same aims. It makes me wish I knew more about the different arts, but of course, learning takes time. I'm glad all the learning you've done is being transformed into new, useful knowledge, and shared with those willing to learn.
