In this riveting tale exploring themes of friendship, sanity, and humanity starring Jamie Foxx and Robert Downie Jr., a paranoid schizophrenic musician (Foxx) is 'discovered' by a reporter (Downie Jr.), who is looking for a subject to write about but ends up discovering much more in his friend and in himself. Their journey is one of tragedy as well as hope against the backdrop of Los Angeles, a concrete jungle which metaphorically represents the human mind.
In this scene, Robert Downie Jr.'s character is driving home from his day job as a soldier in the Iraq War. He offers a homeless bum (Jamie Foxx) a ride to his home at the carnival, where the bum reveals himself to be a bard (a music-based wizard, generally with a high charisma score). Their uncomfortable dialogue in the car is the highlight of the film's excellently-written script, and this very scene is considered by many to be the best performance yet delivered by either actor.
