Today, Friday May 22 2009, we felt the second strong earthquake in Mexico City in less than one month. Unlike those in San Francisco, earthquakes in Mexico City feel like being on a ship in choppy waters. This earthquake felt significantly longer than others and gained intensity as the 15 seconds event dragged on. We left our home and went for a walk; we saw many office workers outside of their buildings however, we did not witness any damage. Our home is perfectly fine and our dogs are not phased; a friend's 3-year old son also managed to sleep thru the seismic event. However, the general commentary through my community agrees that this one felt different and stronger than others in recent memory. Unlike the last earthquake with an epicenter in Chilpancingo (near Acapulco), today's event had an epicenter in the region of Puebla. Specifically, the epicenter of this earthquake was 95 miles south east and the magnitude was 5.7 and the event occurred at 2:24 PM. & Be Safe.

    5 Stars.

  • Thanks for posting, CBC Radio just reported it on the 10:00 news with absolutely no details.

  • According to the USGS it was a 5.7 with an epicenter 95 miles southeast of Mexico City and 34.8 miles down the surface. It hit Mexico City ~23.1 seconds after it started in Puebla. However, larger S waves (side to side motion) than P (up and down motion) waves made it feel stronger than it was.

  • thank you for the information. Be safe!
