Students and teachers helping biologist, Eric Powers to maintain the delicate balance of life in our neighborhood ecosystem. Bobwhite quail are a missing link in our fight against ticks and lyme disease here on Long Island, NY. This project is bringing us one step closer to saving the earth, step by step, person by person, you and me.

  • Hi I really liked your video. My boyfriend is a teacher in New York and he was interested in doing this or a similar project. I just wanted to know if there are any special permits or equipment that he would need to get? Thanks!!

  • @nicolec88 No special permits required but we do need to secure a place to raise the birds outside to adulthood and to release the birds. The birds are pen raised the way I do it. I have seen others raise them "wild" which is much more difficult AND it also means the children cannot work with the birds....AND here's the kicker...they are seeing equal or less success rates as me! So what's the point then of the added hassle? None. Special equipment: egg incubator with auto turner, food.

  • Do you have any wild quail on the property?...if so what are your thoughts on the breeding between pen raised and wild quail?? Will this upset the gene pool?

    Good Video

  • @ryno5561 I thought about the gene-mixing issue before I started until I realized that hunters have been releasing pen-raised birds for hunting purposes for almost 100 years now on Long Island...sanctioned by our own NYDEC. So I'm not doing anything to the gene pool that hasn't already been done. PLUS, the hunters just buy bobwhite quail (there are several varieties)...I am ONLY releasing our local species, the NORTHERN Bobwhite Quail.

    Thanks for your comments!!

  • @insectivore2 Thanks for getting back to me! I think that he has a place to build a pen and raise the birds, but we're still looking for a place to release them. I did a bit of research and I heard that he would need to get a permit from the DEC. Is that true ?
