Machine with Eggshells - Arthur Ganson

This machine was borne out of the impulse to play and the accidental discovery of the sonic potential of the eggshell. For me it is both a farcical meditation on the complexity of complex gear ratios and a machine for sending a strange and unique 'Morse code' message to the far reaches of the universe.

The rhythm of clicks is based on the ratios of the numbers of teeth on the five main gears multiplied together. (The number of revolutions each gear must make before the pattern begins to repeat is stamped below each gear.)

@dreamingmachines It can also be interpreted as a satire of the Lorenz cipher (the machine having twelve wheels all of different prime-numbered sizes and operating on a five-bit telegraph stream) which was, er, cracked during World War II.  Not Morse code but Baudot...

that was amzing! even thoug i read the title, i was never able to figure out what made the sound, until i got it in visuals. Arthur just never fails to fantastifie me!
