I hate how whenever I type in "Durham, NC" into the search bar, things like "hood fights" and "gang members" always pop up. Durham is up there with Chapel Hill and Asheville as one of the most progressive cities in the state. We're educated, culturally-aware, informed, and tolerant. Any urban area is going to have SOME crime. We in Durham like to concentrate on the big picture, that being that Durham is an AMAZING place to live!

And Asheville is just sooo much more of a progressive city than durham I believe. Maybe not as far as medicine and law but human conciseness and co-existence and culture leaps and bounds ahead of d-ham. I grew up in Durham but choose Asheville. When I move back to NC I am moving back to Asheville. Or OBX, represent.

Jesse turner- choose Asheville. It's in the Appalachian mtn chain if the blue ridge mtns, so basically your in the mountains of North Carolina and Inge weather is sooo much better out there. Less humidity for example is the summer time in Durham day time temp will be 90-100. Asheville 80-90 and at night durham 80-85 Asheville 62-76

Don't worry about it. You'll be fine. Just have common sense like don't walk late alone if it's not in well lit areas. The Duke area is really safe, even though it is right next to downtown but downtown is really nice now with a few clubs and restaurants. There is also campus security and cops everywhere. Also, homeless people might try to harass you specially when you're alone, but just ignore them.

Hi everyone! I am going to Duke this fall and I've heard some complains about crimes in Durham and got kinda worried:( Could anybody please tell me which areas are those areas that I better stay away from? Any suggestions on where to rent a safer apartment? Thank you! :)
