1948 Philadelphia Suburban Red Arrow No. 1007 comeing to me!
This is an original San Francisco streetcar, built in 1948 for the San Francisco Municipal Railway (Muni), but it is painted to represent the city of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
Philadelphia ran PCC cars both in the center city and the western suburbs. This car represents the double-ended cars of Philadelphia Suburban Transportation's Red Arrow system. In 1940, PST modernized its fleet with ten Brilliners, a PCC competitor from famed old-line trolley builder J. G. Brill & Co. But the PST order turned out to be the last cars Brill ever built.
Needing more cars after the war, PST turned to St. Louis Car Co., which offered a body shell nearly identical to one used for orders by Muni (which included car No. 1007) and Illinois Terminal Railroad. The private PST was ultimately taken over by the public SEPTA agency, and by 1982 the PCCs and Brilliners were supplanted by Kawasaki light rail vehicles (LRVs).
When the F-line opened in 1995, car No. 1007 was painted in a modernistic silver and red San Francisco scheme like that of Muni's new Breda LRVs. It wasn't popular, so Muni paint shops applied this handsome "Red Arrow" livery in 1997.

Anyone else notice the "Nowhere in Particular" destination sign on the rear? LOL. Nice to know someone at MUNI has a sense of humor.

Ugly? Ride this one and then the Melbourne tram you're waxing romantic about. This car rides smooth and quiet. The Melbourne tram, in Seattle or San Francisco is loud and hard to ride. Evocative, yes, romantic, yes. But that old San Francisco double ender painted in Philly colors is a delight to ride. And so are the the Melbourne cars. Ugly. I mean really, LRVs are ugly, boxy and plastic, PCCs are at least somewhat sensuous, if a bit broad...

Now that is what I'd call an ugly tram. Not the Seattle one. Dave
