This is OSx86 BASICS tutorial, it's meant for absolute beginners who wish to enter the "Hackintosh" world. For advanced info refer to insanelymac(dot)com and OSx86Wiki. There are other ways to install retail OS X on non Apple hardware. This tutorial should be good enough for average tech geek to install OSX on non Apple PC. Please, refer to OSx86 Wiki and other OSx86 forums for additional info and CHECK IF YOUR HARDWARE IS COMPATIBLE with this distro or OSx86 in general in H.C.L. (Hardware Compatibility List).
Main components that must be compatible are Motherboard chipset and CPU. You can download additional drivers, but there is no guarantee they exist, especially if you use non common hardware devices. This distro is primarily aimed at custom built desktop PCs, but it does work with laptops and branded PCs if they are compatible, although you have to be lucky to have the right hardware.
One more thing I forgot to mention in this video is that you'll need at least 6GB of free HDD space, 1GB of RAM, SSE2 or SSE3 CPU and graphics card that supports openGL 2.0 (ATI x1300 and later, and nvidia 6300 and later, the ATI x1200 and nvidia x100 and x200 chips are not supported and will work only in "graphics safe mode").
*ATI x1200 is supported now if you download additional drivers from kexts(dot)com
*nVidia 6100, 61xx, 7100 and 71xx are supported now via EFI studio app (similar to OSx86Tools, just add generated EFI string to your boot.plist)
This tutorial is made for educational purposes, and to show that Macs are just ordinary PCs made from the same parts that PCs are made with EFI instead of BIOS. This version of OS X can be installed and used legally (some will disagree) anywhere in the world. This distribution is not a patched retail Apple OS X DVD, this distribution is property of their respective owners - uphuck/eskurza OSx86 Turk team. You don't have to agree to Apple's license before the installation because there is none.
Tip: you don't need to wait for installation DVD check, just skip it and save time.
Tip 2: The XCode is not included in this distro (if you don't know what it is - you don't need it, it's a developers tool). It can be downloaded from TPB or Apple for free additionally if you need it.
*iAtkos S3 aka Snow Leopard 10.6.3 is released! Sadly, only Intel edition is available, and there is no info about the AMD edition.
For more info go to: uphuck.ggrn.de/forum/index.php
You should also check out the new Snow Leopard OSx86 distro made by Hazard "Leohazard" and if it does not work, go with iAtkos, there is not much of a difference, the installation process is the same as iAtkosv7, iDeneb or iPC. Find Leohazard at Leohazard(dot)com.
* For more drivers go to www(.)osx86(.)nl and www(.)kexts(.)com - remove the brackets.
OSX distro versions:
Tiger - 10.4 "Jas, ..." single core, 512 MBRAM
Leopard - 10.5 "iAtkos, iPC, iDeneb, Kallyway, ..." dual core, 1 GBRAM
Snow Leopard - 10.6 "iAtkos S3, Leohazard, a3.6" dual core 1 GBRAM
Good luck with installing OS X on your PC and "Don't Panic" ;)

@73JKoehn No, if you are using conventional Apple update method. In order to update to Lion you first need Snow Leopard (10.6).

It's not seeing my hard drives. After the welcome screen, as instructed, I launch Disk Utilities. It sees neither of my two internal 120G SATA hard drives, the second of which is partitioned, providing a 52G Fat32 formatted drive on which I'd hoped to install. Hardware: HP dv9620us. I do see my external 2TB back up drive connected via USB, but I don't want to install there. Any suggestions?

@AdamOnDemand It's most probably not seeing your SATA controller. Try to switch the SATA controller mode inside the BIOS to AHCI or similar. Try unplugging one of the SATA HDDs. If everything fails, try another distro or format the whole drive.
