Read description for more information:

This is a rare example of a glitch which does not work in English Red/Blue, but did not originate from Pokémon Red/Green either. It was documented on the Spanish Pokémon Stats forum as "Tentacools in the grass" and expanded upon by Horsie ~ ~ and Paco81. It does not work in any localization of Pokémon Yellow.

Note that it apparently doesn't work if you Surf more than once in between battling the Trainer and actually surfing into the grass.

Steps:
(Spanish version is the only version confirmed for now)

1) Encounter a Trainer, and then perform the Surf glitch to surf into the grass. (press start whilst walking towards the water's edge, then save and when you reset the game Surf will go down as its neutral position)
2) Use Surf to go down into the grass, then carefully spin around to try and encounter a Pokémon. If you fail (as I did lots of times!) simply reset the game. The Pokémon found depend on the Trainer.

  • Well, it makes up for the coast tile glitch. Though not as convenient as you can't use it anytime.

  • @ViperKirby What you can still do is the Safari Zone no clipping glitch, and then use that to talk to the Old Man and then walk on the Cinnibar coast instead of surfing which will let you do the glitch as usual, which takes longer but doesn't require using a Trainer (Flying doesn't disable no-clip), though the effort to time 500 steps might not be worth it, and the Ditto trick (which conveniently works on Spanish version too) for finding Missingno./any non-glitch Pokémon better in that respect.

  • That's strange. But WHY does it only work in the spanish version of the game. That makes no sense.

  • @PTMarc33 I don't know either, though some of the different language games changed the game engine around a little. e.g. at least in this version you can't use Surf to encounter the glitch Pokémon directly on the coast itself anymore.

In case you are wondering, I used the Ditto glitch to find that one particular MissingNo. I found a wild Ditto, and had it transform into a Raticate of mine with a Special of 32.

Actually, cross region trading only has problems between Japanese and non-Japanese versions. I've traded between English and Spanish versions without any problems whatsoever.

  • @ChickasaurusGL Probably slightly for language purposes.

Just like how cross region trading causes cool stuff in Gen I.

  • @0000FFScreenOfDeath You're welcome.

  • @ChickasaurusGL It's like, although the fossil and ghost Missingno. are also dex:000, they don't look like the "standard" Missingno. If use Gameshark to modify the species directly, normal Pokémon often appear garbled when they appear for some reason.

Also, there is something within the base stats structure see Bulbapedia:Pokémon base stats data structure#Sprites, which probably partially explains why hex:248, a hybrid of Articuno on Yellow is blue but looks more like a weird Bulbasaur statue.

  • @0000FFScreenOfDeath A lot of glitch Pokémon appear different between other language games, even if they have the same identifier, as the game doesn't always point to the same place to get the sprite.

The sprite partially depends on the Pokédex number. AFAIK all 'normal' Missingno. look like that on ES R/B, except the fossil and ghost ones, like how all 'normal' Missingno look alike on our RB. One of the other things is how the sprite is decompressed, but I don't understand how it works.
