"Joseph was not only a man who loved God, but was a real guy. He had his fiancé come and tell him she was pregnant with someone else's kid. His heart must have been broken. I think we always just assume he said, "It's ok. You're going to have the Messiah." But he didn't. He didn't believe her. The Bible clearly says he was not going to marry her. You don't break an engagement with someone who you think is going to have the Messiah. You break up with someone who you believe has lied and cheated on you. When the angel comes to tell him that it is the truth, that she is going to have the Messiah, and to go ahead with the marriage, you have to think he might have been a little angry that God didn't tell him this before he had his heart broken. This is a picture of Joseph's submission and character. When he takes Mary as his wife, he becomes the adopted father of the Son of God. You can imagine the pressure that would put him under. Being a normal man trying to raise the Son of God, whose hands had created the whole world. He gave up his ideas of what he wanted his life to be like, to follow what God wanted him to do. What could he give to the Son of God?"
