The openings below the pole sleeves are to allow air flow when the rain fly is attached. Some manufacturers utilize mesh in this area for the same purpose.

@rlmccullough in reality, "going stealth" is not a viable option. You know how many people you have to run from, keep track of, you're by yourself. Unless you're a trained operative that can mentally handle such a situation, but I doubt it.
