I think (at least originally) 2 tracks of a reel-to-reel had analog audio that got decoded - probably frequency decomposition, one per control.

Ladies and Gentleman... This is what got the Showbiz and CEC resteraunts off the ground.. I would love to be right there front and center to see this.. Aaron Fector took anamatronics to another level. the man is a GENIOUS!!!
