@hman9981 Only the herniated disk fragment is removed, not the entire disk. The piece that came out of its place and is compressing the nerve is removed.

@THEGEOFIXX Hi there, I had my surgery on Dec 14. Tomorrow will be 3 weeks. Mine was different than the one on this video. I had L4-5 anterior discectomy and fusion, L4-5 posterior laminectomy and fusion. I had two incisions, one in my belly and one in my back. I feel great. My back pain and numbness in my legs is completely gone.My legs are a little weak and i cant twist, bend or turn yet. I feel better everyday. Im sorry about your pain. I know what its like. I had it for 10 years.

I am in the medical profession so little grosses me out, but I had this surgery (plus a laminectomy) about two years ago and this video just about brought me to tears. I see several people sharing stories of their surgery here - I don't know if it was the combo of procedures or what but I took four months to recover and a year to return totally to normal. It was a tremendously painful experience to me (and my incision was 4 inches long...) but it was well worth the fantastic results I achieved.

I had this done at nufield hospital oxford uk in 2009 the opperation took 1h 30min, i was walking two hours after the opperation ( in the ward ) with no pain in my legs or back, i was home the next day, i went back to work on light dutys a week later, todays date 22nd jan 2011 over two years on, still ok, no pain, still working as a carpet and upholstery cleaner in milton keynes, bucks,UK. ( HTO ).

I have a question about removing this disc fragment: Doesn't this severely compromise the integrity of the disc? Wouldn't this procedure ultimately lead to further deterioration of the disc, since you are removing the outer material structure that provides the disc with its stability?
