Power of the Market - Equality

I've grown a lot in the last 10 years, but it would be all for naught if I had no choice but to ignore my later achievements. Forcing me to end-up in the same place at the end line and be equal to all others means I must be equal to my old self which I don't want to be. It took brain surgery to get me here (really) and I don't like being told it is without value.

@FiverBeyond Because the wealth that the parent owns, was given to him permanently by his customers/employer. The political position was always temporary in nature.
What you're saying is like parents shouldn't be allowed to devote all their time or knowledge on their children, but should instead share some of it with children that receive less of it. Makes no sense.
-
"No, that's not an appropriate comparison. Elected representatives are elected because of themselves."
Exactly. Similarly, vast amounts of economic power should be granted because of an individual's own achievements, not because of their genealogy.
"The parent simply has a choice to share some of his/her wealth."
But not his/her political power? What is the key difference between wealth and political power that makes it alright to share one, but not the other?
-
@FiverBeyond No that's not an appropriate comparison. Elected representatives are elected because of themselves. Their children will certainly receive some political power by virtue of being a child of an elected representative.
Being born to a rich parent doesn't automatically mean you're going to be rich yourself. The parent simply has to choice to share some of his/her wealth with the child. It's immoral to deny parents the right to leave their posessions to their children.

"This is unavoidable, and nothing we can do about it without hurting one group of people."
Nonsense. You're right that inborn genetic traits can't be helped. Money isn't inborn. Money isn't genetic.
A comparison to political power is appropriate. Suppose I am elected to a public office. Does this entitle my children to my political power? Why not? After all, if you are born with intelligence, shouldn't you be born with political or economic power as well?
-
@FiverBeyond Some people are born more intelligent, beautiful or otherwise posses genetic characteristics that are more favorable. Just like some have parents who have worked to make more wealth than the parents of others.
This is unavoidable, and nothing we can do about it without hurting one group of people.
However, ensuring that everyone has the same rights, the same freedom from oppression or coercion, ensures the "starting at the same line".

The issue here is that Capitalism does NOT allow everyone to "start at the starting line". For that you need a much more socialistic system than we have today.
For example, if all children and young people started off with the same capital in life, THAT would be equality of opportunity (let those who can excel do so!). Capitalism emphasizes the flow of money along family lines, ensuring that equality of opportunity does not occur.

@sinistar99 Great comment! Bravo! Capitalism and racism soils all things that are "good" in theory.

"The society which puts equality before freedom will end up with neither."
True indeed, but we need to reconcile precisely what each means, and how one affects the other. Is "freedom" the ability markets to discriminate on the basis of race, gender, etc.? Is "equality" necessarily redistribution of resources?
For over a century, the US justified racial discrimination as the freedom to choose one's associates. To ensure equal opportunity necessitates SOME level of regulatory oversight..

@zzx2847 Also look at the nordic model; countries that have adopted it have an egalitarian society and prosperous economy.
"The society which puts equality before freedom will end up with neither."
Very true. And we only need to look at the history of the USSR for some insight into this. By following Marx the Soviets sought an equal classes society where all people earned the same amount... and in the process they did need to give up individual freedoms. However, the human element of greed and corruption took place and those who had power, the inner party, government, became an upper class. Abolishing both.

The most cogent video negating liberalism you've posted to date. If you have more Friedman, Sowell, and Williams, please post them as frequently as possible! Thank you and keep it up.
