This is my new foxtrotter, Patriot's Sunrise having his first ride. I'm not sure if this is a foxtrot or a flat walk. I'm thinking foxtrot. You be the judge.

  • It's a slow foxtrot. The legs move diagonally with the front hitting before the back making it a 4 beat gait. If the time between each foot fall were equal it would be a slow running walk. As a general rule, the closer it is to a running walk the smoother it is.

I don't know what a flat walk is. The definition above of same side feet moving together with back hitting before front defines an amble or a stepping pace. I think that is different from a flat walk isn't it?

  • A flat walk is not a stepping pace or amble. It should not be lateral. It is very similar to a regular walk but with an elongated stride and a level of overstride in which the back hoof oversteps the track made by the front foot. I'm hoping that made sense...

  • can you go look at my video its called "pinto doing a fox trot?" and tell me if its a fox walk or foxtrot

  • It does look like a slow fox trot to me. The front hits the ground just before the rear diagonal hoof. I also see some headshake that is consistent with a foxtrot. I'd guess it's a fox walk or slow foxtrot.

  • are horses supposed to be that slow

  • Another charmin comment from my NON-Horsey teenager!!

  • its almost a fox trot at the end but its closer to a running walk. if you ask for more speed you will probably get a true fox trot.

  • It's a nice slow foxtrot; a diagonal gait in which the front foot of the diaganol pair hits the ground an instant before the hind. Looks like a nice horse!

  • foxtrot

  • yes great foxtrot!! just slow!!

  • Yes. Perfect sense thank you. I always wondered what a flat walk was.

  • Thanks for the compliment. My MFT and I are coming along since that video was posted. In my MFT world a flat walk is one thing and a running walk is quite another. Running walk is a TWH gait and closer to a broken pace. I watched your video and had some trouble with camera shake but thought I saw flat walk, foxtrot and hard trot. Need to learn how to slow down frames to get a closer look tho. Good Luck with her!
