whats the rough side and smooth? is it diff grain of the belt?

Yes. If you look at most leather belts there will be a finished side (smooth) and an unfinished side (underside which is rough).

Can you use a lansky crock stick sharpener on a convex edge?

You bet, if it has a secondary edge it should be no problem. It won't likely be as effective as this method though. But if that's what works for you then there's no reason not to do it.

@bindlestitch1 Its a bark river bravo necker. Im just worried that if i buy it i wont be able to get it sharp lol. I work outside alot so i like the crock sticks cause they are easy and fast when i come home.

I hear you , man. I say give this method a try first. Stick with it for a few go arounds and then if it doesn't satisfy you then you can always go to the crock sticks.
