  • Soaking the hooves is a great idea, I live in the high desert and I usually throw a bit of hay in the bucket and let them stand in a puddle while they eat and it make a huge difference. Your concern is understandable, but over the years I've come to see what Jamie Jackson and Pete Ramey describe about the hoof showing you what needs to be trimmed. If you start with clearing the flakey material from the sole and don't go past the good sole underneath, this is the depth to trim at.

  • The first few times you try it, you should measure, and I should have mentioned that, but after a while, you will begin to see that the hoof will tell you what it needs. Thanks for the comment and giving me the chance to clear that up.

  • Jack - what about soaking the hooves before you trim! I live in a very dry climate and thats what I do to make the task easier for me and less time for the horse. Lovely wide frogs and great hoof shape on Otis but little concerned you didn´t check levels and angles at all between nipping and filing!
