Bill Would Give President Emergency Control of Internet http://news.cnet.com/8301-13578_3-10320096-38.html?tag=contentMain;contentBody

Recently, we heard rumors that we will not be able to access popular websites like MySpace and Facebook. We also heard that Internet Service Providers (ISPs) were blocking certain websites, a serious affront to our First Amendment freedoms. I know what you're thinking: there is no way this could happen in America. Guess what? We discovered that it's already happening! We learned that the only way we can stop big corporations and ISPs from curtailing our Internet freedoms is if we have something called Net Neutrality. So we had to find out: what is Net Neutrality, and is the Internet as we know it about to change?
Webster's New Millennium dictionary defines Net Neutrality as: "The principle that basic Internet protocols should be non-discriminatory, esp. that content providers should get equal treatment from Internet operators." What would it be like without Net Neutrality? Without Net Neutrality you might not be able to go to some of your favorite websites, and you may have to pay more for music or movie downloads. There would also be censored speech and content, and you may be denied the services you want because your ISP has made a deal with someone else. For example, if you wanted to buy something from eBay using PayPal, but your ISP joined forces with a different online payment company, it would mean that you wouldn't be able to use PayPal unless you incurred an additional service charge.
So Net Neutrality means no discrimination, no favouring one website over another, and no paying a lot of money to get ahead of someone else? Great! Bring on Net Neutrality! What's the problem?

  • It's nice to see videos of ignorant puppets supporting regulation that will destroy the internet as we know it. Net Neutrality will have unintended consequences that will increase the cost, lower accessability and speed. Get ready to pay per gigabyte for your access and kiss your 'unlimited access' plan goodbye, or pay a much higher premium to keep that plan. The consequences of the bill will CAUSE the problems it was meant to prevent. Just say NO to the government.

  • @BSD2000 I am unable to post my comment, will send you a PM instead.

  • The bottom line is the state has no right to exist in the first place, let alone to regulate the internet. If net neutrality passes, the internet will be the farthest thing from free. I can immagine in 20 years you will have to get a liscense to use the internet, get every thing you upload approved by state officials, have to pay fees to the government for using it, have people monitoring everything you do, etc. You'll regret this.

  • @Houshalter They have no right to regulate all that we do & think, but they try. I agree with you, & it would be very scary to think we would need a license and be monitored. You make a valid statement, and you know I can picture this, because the powers that be, want nothing more to control the masses. After all, *they* tell us what the news is - the internet can help educate and liberate us all. That would be a crime I suppose - so for their sake they need to make sure we are monitored.

  • facebooking this now!

  • @gooddarkjedi The only thing that matters in statism is having as much control over your slaves as possible. The FCC is a perfect example of why statism is bullshit. You are basically stealing the internet from us by supporting net neutrality.

  • @gooddarkjedi no, it's going to be used as justification for regulating the internet because it grants the FCC those powers. Goodbye internet porn, wikileaks, anything with drugs or "links to terrorism" in it, etc.

And no, it has not already happened. Just youtube search "Will Net Neutrality Save the Internet?"

  • @gooddarkjedi One more point about China: their economy is parasitic; they live on the wealth and prosperity of the worlds free markets, as do all socialist and Marxist countries. Without free markets, there would be no money in China for the Chinese citizens to spend. Who would buy the billions of products they produce - the Chinese? Without world free markets, there would be no consumers of the products they produce. Technological advancement would also come to an end without free markets.

  • @gooddarkjedi China? Really? In case you didn't know, America CREATED the internet, NOT YOU. All without regulation and the with power and wealth of OUR free market. It's interesting how people who use our technology feel they have the right to tell us how and why we should regulate it. It's ironic and really sad.

I also find it interesting how you bash businesses and the free market, yet feel you are entitled to the prosperity, wealth, products and services it creates.

  • @gooddarkjedi You omitted a crucial second force in a free market: losses. The free market is only free when you balance the gains of profits with the risk of losses. Losses keep companies in check. When the government steps in to reduce risk, the profit/loss balance is destroyed with dire consequences.

Remember this: the free market has given us jobs, computers, the internet, transportation, cell phones, medical cures & drugs, heat, electricity, money in your pocket and the food on your plate.

  • @gooddarkjedi "Net neutrality is against all type of regulation, be it government or company." - Then I guess by your logic you are against regulating the internet. If net neutrality WAS about NOT regulating the internet, then I'd be all for it. Sadly, here in America, that is NOT what it is about. Your definition of net neutrality is an oxymoronic. Net neutrality isn't 'against' anything, it's purpose and goal IS to regulate, plain and simple. That will have negative consequences for consumers.

  • @gooddarkjedi You might be talking about what regulations Finland passed, but you evidently have NO idea how political lobbying works in America, nor do you understand the back room deals being negotiated to increase costs and limit access on the consumer in exchange to allow this to pass. I'm telling you, I know the consequences will be far worse then doing nothing at all, in response to a problem that doesn't exist in the first place.

  • @BSD2000 i do say NO to goverment. i allso say NO to companys. allso net neutrality has passed in europe and we have better freedome of press and faster web. we allso have made it iligal to goverment to control what goes trought these pipes same way we made it iligal to companys. if net neutrality does not pass you become like china.

  • @BSD2000 it will compleatly opposite. unlike companys, we elect the goverment. we can take it down. but we cant elect the companys so we are shit out of luck if they do this. allso again, goverment is not regulating internet. IT IS REGULATING THE COMPANYS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! see the difrence. company is not the same as what goes inside of those pipes. geezus! how many Social Darwinist are here!? it seemes only research you have done is watch Fox news.

  • @gooddarkjedi If a service provider does not deliver the product or service they advertise, you SUE them and let the COURTS settle the issue. You DON'T go running to your mommy government asking them to fix every problem - THAT'S BULLSHIT!

Guess what? ISP's WANT net neutrality! Why? Because they already negotiated a deal with the gov. that in return, they will implement metered usage so they can CHARGE MORE! The gov. is also ready to INCREASE the taxes if this passes. It's loose/loose for US.
