"Tempro la cetra" is a beautiful Madrigal composed by Claudio Monteverdi.
The Tenors Jan van Elsacker and Cyril Auvity sing it beautifully. Here he is accompanied by the early music group L'Arpeggiata. I adore this music. Hope you too.

Lyrics:

Tempro la cetra, e per cantar gli onori
di Marte alzo talor lo stil e i carmi.
Ma invan la tento e impossibil parmi
ch'ella già mai risoni altro ch'amore.

Così pur tra l'arene e pur tra' fiori
note amorose Amor torna a dettarmi,
né vuol ch'io prend' ancora a cantar d'armi,
se non di quelle, ond'egli impiaga i cori.

Or umil plettro a i rozzi accenti indegni,
musa, qual dianzi, accorda, in fin ch'al canto
de la tromba sublime il Ciel ti degni.

Riedi a i teneri scherzi, e dolce intanto
lo Dio guerrier, temprando i feri sdegni,
in grembo a Citerea dorma al tuo canto.

  • Actually the Urtext version is Trombo la cetra

  • That ain't no trumpet dude. And there's two o' them there thingambobs. They call 'em cornetti, an' there's gold in them there hills. Anyway, get a load of the lyrics in verse three:

    "...de la T R O M B A sublime il ciel ti degni".

  • who sings? whose tenor voice is it?

  • The text is a sonet of the most important baroque italian poet, Giambattista Marino, and the musicality of his works can be appreciated only reading the text, also without understanding its meaning. Singer's pronunciation is perfect! Very good performance! I also like the use of psaltery in it.

  • If I may say so it is sung by Cyril Auvity and Jan van Elsacker tenors :)

  • This is a cornetto, not a trumpet :)

  • Also, the trumpet in the beginning? I'd lose it too, the piece is called Tempro la cetra, not Tempro la trompetta! :-)

  • Very nice except if I was the conductor I would play the beginning slower. It's supposed to sound like tuning an instrument which is done slowly.

  • Almost perfect.

... noTe amorose Amor torna a deTTarmi... aCCenti... deGNi ...
