Servicing of Puffing Billy loco 6A at Gembrook.

Puffing Billy is a genuine relic of our more leisurely days. An historic steam train still running regularly in the mountain district it was built to serve at the turn of the century.

The Railway is the sole survivor of four experimental lines used to develop rural areas in the early 1900's. Puffing Billy is now a major tourist attraction, its operation depending on hundreds of dedicated volunteers.

  • is it true that 3a's bits and pieces are being held at Gembrook?

  • Not sure where 3A is, however it is being restored by the Puffing Billy team so I assume it's somewhere up that way.

  • @PoathJunction Yes, that's true. Most of the body of 3A (usable parts) is stored at Gembrook.

  • max5941 you have a poitn about the prices its so successful running every day too they deffinantly could afford to have the prices almsot the price of a suburban ticket! then more locals would use it as a means of transport.. i worked there i know they could aford to do this.

  • PBR has some paid stuff, and I for one can't think of a better job in the 21st Century than driving steam loco's and getting paid for it!!! :-D

Also surprised to see that the planned servicing shed at Gembrook still hasn't been built. Perhaps PBR have decided to leave it open? I know one can sit in the Ranges Hotel across the road and observe the railway over lunch. :-)

  • What a disappointing and overpriced experience Puffing Billy was. WHAT A JOKE!!!

  • Its on the East of Melbourne..

  • The site and sounds of Puffing Billy west of Melbourne Australia, to be on holidays with my young children was one of the highlights of a great time in Victoria. The railways history is as exciting as the day on the railway. The extension has now been completed some years ago with the line going all the way to "End of the Line". The team is all volunteers and really does Victoria proud.
