Handover EUFOR/Tchad-RCA operation

The European EUFOR/Chad-RCA operation was a first; it ended on the 15th March 2009 with the official handover to the United Nations forces.

The protection operation was part of a regional approach to the crisis in Darfur. It was conducted by Europe under its European Security and Defence Policy (ESDP) and mobilised 26 nations, including three non European member states, and had an average troop strength of 3,700.

It was backed by the United Nations Security Council Resolution 1778 which was passed on the 25th September 2007.

The European forces therefore had a one year mandate in which to deploy the military operation and reach full operational capability under the operational command of the Irish General Patrick Nash.
The objective was to protect civilians, refugees, displaced persons and humanitarian personnel in danger in eastern Chad and the north eastern Central African Republic.




L'opération Européenne EUFOR/Tchad-RCA était une première, elle s'achevait ce 15 mars 2009 sur un passage de relais officiel aux forces des Nations Unies.

Cette opération de protection qui s'inscrit dans le cadre d'une approche régionale de la crise du Darfour a été initiée par l'Europe dans le cadre de sa politique de sécurité et de défense (PESD), elle a mobilisé 26 nations dont 3 extra-européennes pour un effectif moyen de 3 700 hommes.

Elle s'appuyait sur la résolution 1778 du Conseil de Sécurité des Nations Unies du 25 septembre 2007.

Les forces Européennes avaient ainsi un mandat d'un an pour mettre en place et rendre parfaitement opérationnel sous les ordres du Général Irlandais Patrick Nash, un dispositif militaire de protection des civils en danger, réfugiés, déplacés et humanitaires, dans l'Est du Tchad et le Nord Est de la République centrafricaine.

Cette opération limitée dans le temps avait pour finalité de déboucher dans les meilleures conditions sur cette transition, la passation à la MINURCAT la force des Nations Unies et de l'Unité Africaine sur cette zone, d'un dispositif déployé et éprouvé.
