Bob Dylan covered this traditional Australian folk song a few years ago. To keep his family from starving our hero Jim Jones took to poaching on a rich mans land. He was caught and found guilty by a Judge and Jury of rich men. The judge sentenced him to be taken to Botany Bay and used as a slave for the rest of his life. Like others he eventually escapes and joins a gang to wreak havoc on his cruel British jailers. Give em some stick Jim...
To lend authenticity to this old folk song I decided to sing it like a malnourished, toothless, desparate, escaped convict with a bad case of rickets. This explains why I 'deliberately' go off pitch, no prizes for guessing when!! (probably easier to spot when I hit the correct key). I reckon it could be the Digitech, it can't keep up with me hahahahaha
Appologies to any Australians if I have got any of this history wrong.

Capo on 5th fret

1. [G]Come and listen for a moment, lads,
And hear me tell my [C]tale.
How [G]across the sea from England
I [C]was condemned to [G]sail.

Now the [G]jury found me guilty,
Then says the judge, says [C]he,
Oh for [G]life Jim Jones I'm [D]sending you
[C]Across the stormy [G]sea.

But [C]take a tip before you ship
To [G]join the iron gang.
Don't [C]get too gay in Botany Bay,
Or [G]else you'll surely [D]hang.

Or [G]else you'll surely hang," says he.
And after that, Jim [C]Jones,
It's [G]high above on the [D]gallows tree
The [C]crows will pick your [G]bones

2. And our ship was high upon the sea
Then pirates came along,
But the soldiers on our convict ship
Were full five hundred strong.

For they opened fire and somehow drove
That pirate ship away.
But I'd rather have joined that pirate ship
Than gone to Botany Bay.

With the storms ragin' round us,
And the winds a-blowin' gale,
I'd rather have drowned in misery
Than gone to New South Wales.

There's no time for mischief there, they say
Remember that says they
Oh they'll flog the poaching out of you
down there in Botany Bay

3. Now it's day and night and the irons clang,
And like poor galley slaves
We toil and toil, and when we die
Must fill dishonored graves,

And it's by and by I'll slip my chains,
Well, into the bush I'll go
And I'll join the bravest rankers there,
Jack Donohue and co.

And some dark night, when everything
Is silent in the town
I'll shoot those tyrants one and all,
I'll gun the flogger down.

Oh, I'll give the land a little shock,
Remember what I say,
And they'll yet regret they've sent Jim Jones
In chains to Botany Bay.

  • What a beautiful piece of music!

  • @SHSATNewYork ...Thank you very much for listening and your kind comment

  • Thanks for the comment. Yes, I have heard it sung that way too. I think there are many ways of singing these old traditional folk songs, I don't suppose I have ever sung a song the same way twice.
