I played around with it, and I think that window is opened by throwing the lever that extends the bridge, because you need that bridge to get back to the right after you fall out the window. In the 16-bit versions I found that window was always open, so I could get stuck on the left side of the moat and have to fall in to get death-warped back to the right side.
