This is the Los Angeles City Council taking up a resolution put on the agenda to declare June 9, 2010 be American Society of Civil Engineer's Day. The council passed the resolution by unanimous vote.

The following is the text of the resolution:

JUN 02 2010 RESOLUTION

WHEREAS, the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE), founded in 1852, is a non-profit organization representing more than 144,000 members of the civil engineering profession worldwide, and is America's oldest national engineering society whose mission is to facilitate the advancement of technology, encourage and provide the tolls for lifelong learning, promote professionalism and the profession, develop and support civil engineer leaders, and advocate infrastructure and environmental stewardship; and

WHEREAS, the Metropolitan Los Angeles Branch of the ASCE was founded in 1997, represents over 4,000 members of the ASCE residing in the metropolitan Los Angeles area, and is the largest Branch in the Nation; and

WHEREAS, June 9, 2010, marks the Inaugural Los Angeles City Hall Legislative Drive-in of the ASCE MLAB; and

WHEREAS, MLAB ASCE organizes outreach events for school children throughout the City that consist of presentations and activities on engineering topics including earthquakes, sustainability, and construction, in addition to hosting engineering competitions for students of all ages to teach engineering principals and engage students to pursue higher education; and

WHEREAS, the Department of Public Works, Bureau of Engineering and ASCE partner together annually to host the Los Angeles Regional High School Bridge Contest, which includes primarily the City's underrepresented schools; and

WHEREAS, the MLAB offers guidance to young aspiring engineers through five local university chapters including California State University Los Angeles, California State University Northridge, Loyola Marymount University, University of California Los Angeles, and University of Southern California; and

WHEREAS, City employees and projects have received numerous awards and recognitions from MLAB ASCE including the Northeast Interceptor Sewer Project (2005 Outstanding Government Civil Engineering Project), Joe Billy Hawkins, Jr., P.E. (2008 Outstanding Civil Engineer in Government), Clark W. Robins, P.E., S.E., (2009 Lifetime Achievement Civil Engineering), and the Andres & Maria Cardenas Recreation Center (2009 Outstanding Architectural Engineering Project); and

WHEREAS, members of the ASCE work both for the City and its consultants and partner together to deliver infrastructure projects vital to the economy, safety, and prosperity of the residents of Los Angeles; and

THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED, that the City Council and the Mayor of Los Angeles do hereby proclaim Wednesday, June 9, 2010" American Society of Civil Engineers Day" and encourage all Angelenos to recognize the contributions of ASCE professionals to maintaining and improving their quality of life.
