Hey, it's a very nice idea to bring mate to your hiking.
However: por favor!
No such thing as 'washing!'.
Proper way to enjoy a good mate:
Put the mate on it.
Cover the opening with your hand, invert it and give gentle shake. That way, the dust gets to the top.
Now, pour water (80 degrees Celsius) gently in one corner. Insert the 'bombilla diagonally, straight to the bottom. Let it sit for a minute to let the yerba expand.
Now, pour a bit more water.
Enjoy!

its funny how here teen sit in a circle and smoke pot. in argentina they sit in a circle and drink mate lol.
drinkin mate with friends is sort of like a bonding experience.
there are a lot of unspoken rules when drinkin mate. and 1 of them is DONT STEER IT! hahahha. its okay if ur own ur own i guess but dont do it when drinkin with habitual mate drinkers. you'll look like a fool haha. and "washing" is totally ok.

@ArgentineConnection I have a friend who lived in Argentina for 2 years. He came back with it. I saw the gourds and bombas on his shelf and asked what it was. The rest is history. Most of my family and friends drink it now, even co-workers. It is becoming more popular here in the U.S.
He told me about all the rules, which I believe vary depending on region in Argentina and Southern Brazil. He does get upset when I stir it. Maybe I should start calling it the "California" way to drink mate
