The great thing about jazz is that younger artists or artists in the same age group are so ready to acknowledge each influence of other players. And Joe Lovano gives a deep deep lesson in that acknowledgement and he's a heavy cat himself.

Joe says it all. One of the best things he said was that Sonny inspired him to be himself. That's what it's all about.

Thanks for posting this Bret, really good to hear what Joe says about Sunny Rollins, it's only when I hear comments like these, that I understand my own values and appreciations. Sonny is certainly a shining light as a musician and beautiful person also.
We need more like him!

"The confidence to be yourself"! I love him too Joe. Thanks for taking a few minutes to talk to me last year. I told you about meeting Sonny and my conversation with him. He told me, "I got to practice every day!" Not a day has gone by in the last two years that I haven't had the horn in my mouth. Saw you with McCoy Tyner last week in Portland & you guys were killin' it. Thanks for this clip Bret.
