@DavidAWagner The answer: nobody. But you clearly miss the true significance. In DaVinci's time there were no helicopters. There were no airplanes. This design existed only in his mind and there were no examples except what little could be found in nature to draw inspiration for it. Its nearly the equivalent of designing a lunar module before rockets even existed. Pure unadulterated genius.

@rauldurand Why not? Your legs alone are capable of lifting your entire weight.

THE HELICOPTER DOES NOT FLY BECAUSE OF IT'S DOWN DRAFT TO THE EARTH , BUT BY SCREWING ITSELF INTO AIR. FOR DA VINCI TO SEE THIS IN HIS PERIOD, AND TO BE THE ONLY PERSON TO UNDERSTAND IT. IS GENIUS.
MOST PEOPLE TODAY DON'T UNDERSTAND IT, IMAGINE KNOWING IT THEN.

anyone thinking this would work: go peddle in a rowboat without removing the peddles from the water and tilting them... forward-backward-forward-backw
ard... same with this apparatus, only with the difference that all the blades would negate each others lift-power to begin with... -
helicopter? more like useless piece of garbage

lighter weigh and stronger materials are the key to success. thing how strong compact disc material is/are and how lightweight they are. There are many theories yet to be discovered. somebody will develop a human powered aircraft that will fly around the world eventually. maybe disc shaped is the way to go. more wings could help as well. never be affraid to try new ideas.

will the person be able to lift his own weight, and that of the machine? 'because the machine looks pretty heavy?
-
@carcano38 he keep in mind he's never seen anything fly before except for a bird. His design got pretty close to a helicopter design. and he only gets one shot in a lifetime, it takes years to build something like this back then a alot. It took like a million tries to invent the airplane and the lightbulb, but at this tame more technologies and resources.

today we laugh at inventors, who built things, that dont actually work. But he was a genius? How did he not understand, that this does never work?

ahem "is the power generated by a person able to lift its own weight?" yes, given that you can generate a grater force then applied. for example lets say you run 5-10 mph you can move 20+ mph on a bicycle.that is a 2 gear machine start with a large gear and make them smaller you can get enough force for lift not much lift granted but lift.
I can't believe that someone took the time to actually built a full size model of his design. I would be interested in the total weight of the craft. Looks like it would be 200 lbs plus the weight of the pilot who would be willing to risk his life in trying to fly it.

Does the power generated by a person can lift its own weight????
