Also known in the UK as fly-shunting. :o)
In the olden days the shunter (a person) used to have to run alongside the wagon and stop it with the handbrake! Amazingly dangerous...
-
I do this on a daily basis. It completely safe if you know what you're doing.

@whygod1105 They use them as 'riding platforms' in yards and switching areas.

If you railfan anywhere else there cop comes around and tells you to get lost. Hes antiy railfan and a headcase from what I hear.

The railroad is not in business to provide more jobs. It is in business to make a profit (in North America anyway).
If kicking can be done safely, there is nothing wrong with it. As a former conductor I would rather kick than ride cars back to a coupling anyday.
As long as it's done safely in a railyard I encourage my crews to kick.
Theres caboses on the lines.... I thought they didnt use those anymore...

@whygod1105 They are used for long backup moves... a place for the conductor to stand and watch crossings as the train is pushed by the engine.

Thanks for letting me know what the cabooses are used for. I like that berm - you can see everything, the light is good, and you are out of the way.

An engine pushes one or more cars at a good speed, then the conductor opens the knuckle and the engine stops. The car(s) keep going on inertia.
