  • Theres caboses on the lines.... I thought they didnt use those anymore...

  • @whygod1105 They are used for long backup moves... a place for the conductor to stand and watch crossings as the train is pushed by the engine.

  • the cabooses are used for the 557 to moose jaw and hey thats were i railfan from the berm on the south side of the yard

  • Thanks for letting me know what the cabooses are used for. I like that berm - you can see everything, the light is good, and you are out of the way.

  • please define kicked

  • An engine pushes one or more cars at a good speed, then the conductor opens the knuckle and the engine stops. The car(s) keep going on inertia.

  • Also known in the UK as fly-shunting. :o)

In the olden days the shunter (a person) used to have to run alongside the wagon and stop it with the handbrake! Amazingly dangerous...

  • I do this on a daily basis. It completely safe if you know what you're doing.

  • @whygod1105 They use them as 'riding platforms' in yards and switching areas.

  • Gondola: IM FREE!

  • From what a cn guy told me its not burnt its paint it used to be used in maintence service prior to being returned back to mainline action

  • I'm talking about that dirty bacl thing.

  • thatas not the burnt one the one your thinking of has been sold to curtis construction for scrap.

  • If you railfan anywhere else there cop comes around and tells you to get lost. Hes antiy railfan and a headcase from what I hear.

  • The railroad is not in business to provide more jobs. It is in business to make a profit (in North America anyway).

If kicking can be done safely, there is nothing wrong with it. As a former conductor I would rather kick than ride cars back to a coupling anyday.

As long as it's done safely in a railyard I encourage my crews to kick.
