In this 3rd and final part Tim talks about women's fly fishing in the UK and raises the controversial point that perhaps women make better fly fishermen than the men do! He also talks about trout fishing at Narborough Trout Lakes in Norfolk, UK as well as salt water fly fishing.

Transcript:
TIM GAUNT-BAKER: ..........whilst the guys go fishing but hey, some of the wome decide to fish as well you know and THEY CATCH MORE FISH THAN WE DO!

INTERVIEWER: Really? Are you joking?

TIM GAUNT-BAKER: No, I'm not joking. They hold all the world records....well...not the world records but all the national records. The ladies have the heaviest. fish ever caught, which was 64.75 lbs and which was caught by Miss Ballantyne in the early 1900s. It took her so long to land it, they has to light bonfires beside the (River) tay so that they could see to get it in, but she landed it! And then we have the best one, the heaviest one caught on a fly, again a lady and the same in England and the same in Wales, so us fellas aren't doing too well.

INTERVIEWER: So is this something you are saying as a professional fly fishing instructor or is this generally known in the fishing world ....tha women are better than men?

TIM GAUNT-BAKER: I think it isn't generally known that women are better than men and men would never admit that anyway but I think that men are always very competitive and what generally happens is that a gille will tell them to, " .....Cast to the middle of the river, Sir, and follow the line of bubbles right down the pool, Sir, and don't cast any further than that and you'll catch a fish." That's fine! That's what we do! Then someone comes along the bank and he starts casting twice as far as you're casting so you want to show hime that you can cast just as far as he can and so it goes on. Now the lady's been told exactly the same thing but she doesn't bother about that because she knows she can't compete with the distant cast so she is staying where she is (going) and she generally picks the fish up. It's nothing to do with femerones, which is what a lot of people always claim (laughs).

INTERVIEWER: What about the other thing I wanted to ask you about? It was the salt water fly fishing because I saw that on your web site. What's that all about?

TIM GAUNT-BAKER: Well, salt water fly fishing....it's a big craze, everybody has suddenly got into salt water fly fishing; actually i can go back to when I was eleven years old catching mackeral on bits of feathers in Cloughton Wyke, which is in Yorkshire. So there's nothing particularly new about it but it's now become quite a fad; a lot of people now around the south coast, which is where it started and you've got sea bass coming in on the tides and people found they could catch them on the fly. Now, sea bass are coming right round the coast of Scotland and right the way down to northern England and obviously up the Norfolk coast here. And a lot of people would like to know how to do it (salt water fly fishing), where to go and the safe way to catch fish. So that's why we run the courses! Basically it's course to show you the type of places you can go, the type of flies that you need to use, the equipment that you need to use and the sort of places that you need to look for and the signs that show that the fish are there. Because obviously you can't see them in the water, they're not like trout that you can actally see in the clear water sitting there., you've got to look for other features and thats what we do on the salt water (fly fishing ) course.

INTERVIEWER: And you said that we are going to go to a lake today here in Norfolk. Where are we going?

TIM GAUNT-BAKER: Well, we are going to Narborough Lakes which is based just outside King's Lynn and it's got three lakes that you can fish on. These are stocked lakes with rainbow trout. Now the difference between rainbow trout and wild brown trout is that rainbow trow are not indigenous to the Great Britain; they came originally from Canada and the USA and they were brought over here because their growth rate is very quick and they produce meat quickly and they are ideal for fish farmers to grow trout for the table. However, they also make quite aggressive fish to catch so we take people ther because it's quite a good place to start (fly) fishing. Now rainbows (trout) are by and large unlike brown trout, they tend to go around the pond or the lake that they're in, swimming around looking for food. Now brown trout are territorial, so a brown trout will lay underneath a falllen log or along the edge of a lake somewhere where (as I said) rainbow trout will swim round looking for food so every so often, they'll come past you. Make sure you've got the right fly in the water at the right time and you'll catch one. See all the videos and the comple transcript at http://www.norfolkflyfishing.com/blog

  • My wife loves to fish.

  • @Skaz32225 his point was women hold the biggest fish record internationally.

  • yes they try to be, faire play to all woman.

  • I don't know if women are better at fly fishing than men, simply because there are not a lot of women who fish anyway, except maybe in the USA. But suppose that women would put on their hip boots and start to flyfish, their catch could be just as good as men, because sometimes it is also about luck.

  • Thanks for the invite, great channel very clear casting instructions,i have learned a lot, still a long way to go but enjoy every moment.Steve.
