  • I assume that you are in the southern hemisphere because In the northern hemisphere such as in the USA the midpoint between the hour hand 12 o'clock is south. Not north.

  • The point between the Hour hand pointing at the Sun and the number 12 on your watch should be pointing at the South if your in the Northern hemisphere not pointing to the North ; )

  • For everyone correcting him. He indicates that the shadow of a match in the center of the watch will lay on the hour had. Meaning that the hour hand is facing AWAY from the sun. In that case his mark between the hour and 12 would be north. If he were to use the method which you are discussing, having the hour hand face TOWARDS the sun, then it would indicate south.

  • I just lay on my back naked with wood and the shadow tells me the time, true north and what month it is. This skill has been used by time travelers for thousands of years, also it's a great way to hunt bears. Thank you for your time, that is all.

  • @Liv2Ride1958 not true, it depends on if it is before noon or after noon, is is easyer to make the half betveen 8 o`clock ( 20PM) and 12 in the interval betveen 8 and 12 ( 8-9-10-11-12 - middle is10) and say it is north as it is harder to get middle from 8-7-6-5-4-3-2-1-12 and say it is south..... so must think it is not true if you are before noon like 11AM...... i wonder if in winter springtime or in octoberare there errors because of the different position of the Sun on sky

  • @stankinlincoln ... best practice is to *correlate* results from 2-3 methods in case you've screwed up one method.

  • @Ikefis ... and it follows that if you are any good at estimating the time by the position of the sun esp. at high noon, you can work off this time to picture the clock hands mentally and get a decent bearing- still better than wandering aimlessly, I reckon.

  • @maximilian333 surprising how many doubt this. Thanks

  • @Ikefis right-o! as long as you know the correct time, you can guess accurately where the hand would be and where the 12 would be.
