Ness can cancel the momentum of his second jump by using an attack. All characters can cancel their first jump by using their double jump. So, Ness jumps, cancels his first jump with his second jump, then cancels his upward momentum by using an aerial. Then, he hits the Z button before touching the ground to eliminate the landing animation lag of the aerial. The easiest way to do this is to slide your thumb across the right and down c buttons, and the A button in one motion, then hit Z.

@iamamastar It's cool.

@bishiknight I didn't mean to post a pompous "well ,actually" comment. I just think it's important to understand why Ness and Yoshi can double jump and other characters cannot. It helped me understand ness better personally.

@iamamastar Thanks for the clarification. You are correct, however whether the aerial cancels his upward momentum or just stops him from getting to the part of his jump where the momentum is greater is really just semantics. Also I find that z-canceling everything not only helps my timing, but also makes me safer if I ever accidentally bair or fair while executing the fast inputs required for consecutive djc aerials. My explanation is good enough to teach and this is youtube, not smashboards.

@bishiknight helpful information, but some of it is a little off. the reason ness can djc is because his second jump follows a circular motion. it is very slow to gain upward momentum in the beginning of the jump, so when you cancel it with an aerial attack, you just fall. try doing the aerial later in the second jump, and you will see that the attack itself does not cancel momentum. pk magnet is the only move that cancels vertical momentum for ness.
uair and dair auto cancel
thats all

@Ebbzzor It requires practice, but it's pretty easy. You just slide your thumb across those three buttons really fast, and you can literally spam the Z button in this game, so you don't have to worry about timing on Z-canceling. I can break shields with it, there's videos of Isai breaking sheilds with it; it's possible. The only thing you have to watch out for is when you string them together, you have to hit the ground before you slide your thumb again or you'll full hop/ tilt instead.
It seems odd because it's the Japanese version of the game. The sound effects are different too.
