Soghomon Tehlirian's Trial in Berlin 1921
Assignment Berlin centers on an actual historic event of the 1920's; the Berlin assassination of Talaat Pasha, the ex-Grand Vezir of the Ottoman Empire (now modern Turkey) by an Armenian named Soghomon Tehlirian. During W.W.I, Talaat Pasha was responsible for the 1915 to 1918 "Armenian Holocaust" in which 1.5 million Armenian men, women, and children were systematically annihilated at the hands of the Ottoman Turks. This was the first mass genocide of the twentieth century, and Pasha's execution was in direct reprisal for carrying out that horrific historical event. The trial was publicized worldwide, and the verdict that came from an all-German jury stunned the legal world. The meticulous assassination plans, the precedent-setting trial, and the assassination are all recreated with astonishing realism in the film.
The Armenian massacres were reported in "Ambassador Morgenthau's story", (memoirs of Henry Morgenthau). This holocaust was documented in Dr. Johannes Lepsius' book titled "The Massacres of the Armenians". The movie brings out some of the details of a forgotten genocide, perpetrated by the Young Turks, lead by Talaat, Enver and Djemal.
The intent of Assignment Berlin was to create an awareness of mass terrorism and its subsequent repercussions. The importance of this message cannot be overstated and is underscored by an actual statement by Adolph Hitler as he discussed the possibility of implementing the "final solution" to the Jewish problem. Hitler remarked, "After all who remembers today the extermination of the Armenians."
Assignment Berlin is based on the true story of the assassination of Talaat Pasha and subsequent trial of Soghomon Tehlirian, his assassin, in 1921. Talaat Pasha was responsible for planning and executing the pogrom that massacred over 1.5 million Armenians.
Although the facts are not in dispute, Tehlirian and his defense team make a compelling case before a German court. Pitting the crime committed against a man and the state against a crime committed against all of humanity.

@00thelastottoman00, everybody is entitled to his or her opinion. But the fact remains that the Ottoman Empire and the Young Turks have committed crimes against innocent
Armenians. The civilized world is with Armenians, and sooner or latter Turkey has to accept the facts and be brave enough to take the responsibility for the first Genocide
of twentieth century.
