Neither player was particularly fast in terms of straight line speed.  Neither were sub 4.5 guys, probably in the 4.55 area. Sanders may have been a couple hundredths of a second faster in the 40. What made Barry look faster is his elusiveness and acceleration. He can cut like a cat then get back to full speed in a nano-second. Payton would rather stiff arm or run over a defender than juke.

Both methods... highly effective.

Sanders - more agile, better vision, had a passing game in Detroit to take the focus squarely off of him. The better pure runner.

Payton - stronger runner, better blocker, better receiver, could even throw the football well, never had a passing game in Chicago minus 1 solid year by McMahon in '85. Opposing D's focus was squarely on him. The better all around RB.

Sanders & Sayers were the most fluid runners I've seen. Payton the best football player I've seen period.

great work man!Barry was such a pure and gifted athletes,for me he was not only the best RB of all time he was one of the greatest pure athletes in all sports and i am a niners fan...!he was so exciting to watch even with a médiore team(lions of those days) but he was worth the price all by himslef,nothing againts the other great but i realy think that on some nights he was almost a superman himself,great work again

um walter doesnt have more juking ability!!! Barry is the most agile back ever!!!!duhhhhh oMG!!

he didnt jsut do it out of respect though it was part of it. the lions wouldnt trade him and he was their entire offense and basically besides him they sucked. he had to run for him life jsut to get any yards at all.
