This, IMO, is one of the most eloquently stated arguments from Hitchens on why we don't need religion. It's from his closing arguments at the "Munk Debates".

@theetrue How is not believing in a place that we can't see and have no evidence for a ridiculous statement? The burden of proof falls on the person who is claiming that something exists but no one has evidence that it does. That would be hell and you are claiming that we need to prove that there isn't one but you can't prove a negative. You can't have evidence of something that doesn't exist. You don't understand where burden of proof has to fall.

I often get comments from religious believers and it is always the same thing. "You need to open your mind and heart and accept your savior, yada, yada, yada...". As a survivor of an extremely dysfunctional home, I can attest to the fact that gods do not answer prayers, and a god who waits until it is too late to answer a child's prayer because it isn't on his timetable is a vicious sadist.
